The Stay Strong Tote foundation began as a service project providing care packages to the New Brunswick, NJ, Ronald McDonald House. The care packages were designed to send a little love and support to the moms beginning their stay as their children were being treated in a nearby hospital.
The care packages are delivered in tote bags and contain a number of items including handmade shrugs and shawls.
We made our first delivery in July 2016. In April of 2017 we registered with the federal government and officially became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and as of January 2018 we shipped and delivered over 300 Stay Strong Totes to Ronald McDonald Houses in New Brunswick and Long Branch, NJ, Grand Rapids, MI, Denver, CO, Wilmington, DE and Providence, RI. We also have shrug/shawl coordinators in Syracuse, NY and Seattle, WA. It is our hope to bring our Stay Strong tote program to as many RMD Houses as possible. We need volunteers to reach out to their local RMD House to see if they are interested in receiving our Stay Strong totes. We need knitters and crocheters donating shrugs and shawls and getting as many groups involved as possible. We need items from our Amazon wishlist. And we need help spreading the word so our community can grow.
Shrugs and shawls can either be shipped/delivered to Mary Langdon, 1 Redwood Road, Martinsville, NJ 08836 or dropped at the Washington Valley Library, 1961 Washington Valley Road in Martinsville. We also meet at the Martinsville Community Center (located behind the Washington Valley Library) on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 12:30-2:30. Stop in and knit/crochet with us or to drop off shrugs.
If you’d like to support the Providence, RMD House, ship your shrugs/shawls to the Yarn Shop Girls at Love 2 Knit, 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich, RI 02818. We will ship a matching number of Stay Strong Totes with toiletry and gift items to Ann, Gayle and Marissa and they will gather with their knit/crochet volunteers to pack up and deliver for us. The Providence RMD House supports families whose children are being treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and has 28 bedrooms. It is our hope to provide a tote for every mom checking in so your help with this house would be greatly appreciated.
We have some volunteers who have reached out and explained our project to their local house. You can email a coordinator about supporting your local house or simply ship to either Mary in NJ or the Yarn Shop Girls in Rhode Island. We will see that your gifts are safely delivered.
