All Knit Shrug to Send a Hug

We keep saying that any stitch pattern – knit or crochet – can be used to make a shrug.  It truly is that simple.  Here is a beautiful example of a shrug knitted up on US19 needles with nothing more than using the knit stitch!  My daughter, Molly, has been busy helping to send some hugs through shrugs to RMD House moms.  Molly likes to keep the pattern simple but uses her creativity through her color choices and yarn textures.

Here’s what you’ll need and what you need to know.

Two skeins of Lion Brand Homespun, 1 skein of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball.  US19  29″ circular needles.  Holding one strand of Homespun with one strand of Shawl in a Ball together throughout.  Cast on 65 stitches leaving an 8″ tail for seaming.  Knit every row until you have enough yarn to bind off plus an additional 8″ for seaming.  Start your bind off on same side/corner as your cast on tail.  When you’re done binding off your tail will be in the opposite corner and you will have a tail to seam each sleeve.  Piece will be approximately 28″ long.   Fold corners toward center of fabric and use tails to sew 3-4″ seams to form sleeves.

Garter stitch is reversible, but with most stitch patterns you’ll want to lay your fabric with wrong side up before seaming.

We typically wash our pieces before seaming as they tend to dry a little faster – but that choice is yours.  To wash: Fill sink with tepid water and add a fiber wash or gentle shampoo.  Add shrugs.Soak for 15-20 minutes.  Carefully lift shrugs/shawls from water.  To make lifting easier, you can place a strainer or a rack in sink before filling and use it to gently lift items from water to avoid stretching.  Refill sink with tepid water to rinse.  If you’d like to add a little softness, you can add a bit of hair conditioner to the rinse water.

Drain water from sink and gently press out as much water as you can.  Roll in a clean towel and press out more water.  Place shrug in a clean pillow case and run through “Spin Only” cycle in your washer.  This really adds bounce back to your fabric!  Lay flat to dry.

Remember, its because of YOU that a mom will receive a Stay Strong Tote.  Please print out our PDF notecard and add a message to your shrug to personalize your gift before shipping to us or delivering to your local Ronald McDonald House.  Click here to download our Notecard for shrugs:shawls
